Gangothpathi

Gangothpathi or Ganga Saptami or Ganga Jayanti is celebrated on the 7th day (Saptami) of Sukla Paksa, in the month of Vaisakhi (April – May). According to Brahma Purana, Ganga Saptami, also known as Jahnu Saptami, is said to be day Goddess Ganga descended on to the Earth in the Himalayas. Hence every year the Saptami day of the Shukla Paksha in Vaisakhi month is celebrated as Ganga Saptami or the birthday of Mother Ganga River. This year, Ganga Saptami Festival 2012 is on 28th April 2012.

While another popular story about Ganga Saptami is the River Ganga  entered into Sage Jahnu Rishi’s ashram and disturbed his meditation. Sage Jahnu was much powerful than Ganga River and by getting anger, Jahnu Rishi drank Ganga and later released the Ganga through his ear. This is another reason why Ganga Saptami is also known as Jahnu Saptami.
On the occasion of Ganga Saptami several pujas and rituals were offered to Goddess Ganga.

Doing Poojas at home give more pala.
